Plan the load paths
L and U layouts can create sheltered spaces; courtyards bring light deeper into a home. Bracing, support lines and horizontal load transfer must work with the plan. More corners and perimeter also affect quantities and details.
Design balconies and terraces
Supports, drainage, waterproofing and thermal bridging require coordination. Full-height upper-floor openings need designed fall protection. A separately supported balcony can sometimes be the more practical solution.
Use clear roof geometry
Single-pitch roofs have one plane; dual-pitch roofs have two meeting at a ridge, potentially with different slopes. Flat roofs also need falls and reliable drainage. Coverings and spans help determine the appropriate design.
